The featured beer painting of the day is of Sunken Island IPA by Kenai River Brewing Co. I found this beer in a weird mixed six-pack of half Kenai River Sunken Island and half MSBC Sockeye Red at the Brown Jug Liquor Store in Anchorage, Alaska.
I’m not sure why this IPA is named Sunken Island, but I am imagining it is because when you are fishing in the Kenai River all the fish hang out in shallower spots. It’s funny when people try to catch them with lures, because the fish are not even thinking about eating anything. They are there for one reason, to spawn. That is why you might see some people wearing t-shirts that say, “Spawn ‘Til You Die!” Arguably not a bad way to go, and a natural part of the fish life cycle.
This beer was pretty good, it’s rating is 85 on Beer Advocate. I like the malt body and nice aroma. The beer hits you with grapefruit in the beginning and lingers out to a strong hop bitterness in the end. These guys dry hop, but don’t forget the bittering hops too! I found this one to be highly drinkable.
Cheers to the Sunken Island! Grab those fishies, then grab a cold one from the cooler to make space! Cheers to fishing the Kenai River!!! Kenai River Brewing, I want to paint live in your tasting room. I heard it is an awesome restaurant, but still haven’t made it there. I am hoping my schedule will allow a trip out in fall, or maybe even early August.
