The featured beer painting of the day is of All Funked Up Saison by Against the Grain Brewery. This is an artisan style sour brew made in Louisville, Kentucky. This particular bottle was originally brought to Anchorage for the Culmination Beer Fest organized by Gabe Fletcher of the Anchorage Brewing Company. Culmination allows beer enthusiasts to sample a variety of rare beer, mostly sours, and some barleywines and IPAs. All of them are hand selected by Gabe. Left over beer is sold at La Bodega, and Brooks, a friend of Keith, who invited me over for a beer tasting at his BBQ opened this bottle, so I could include it in this series, since I didn’t have a beer from Kentucky, yet.
When I put the glass to my lips, the taste of the Culmination Beer Fest came tearing into my palate. This is a “Funky” Saison brewed with melon and finished with Brettanomyces. I thought that maybe the melon would be more apparent, but it was very faint, if noticeable at all. Overall the beer tasted fruity, with just the right amount of sour flavor to be refreshing on a sunny day. The funk made me think of a fender telecaster, and a groovy beat rolled through my bloodstream. I had to drop my chicken and stand up and dance for a second! This beer just got me grooving, and channeling a Kentucky-style party!
