Aspen Trees in Fall custom oil painting. 36"x18", oil on panel.

Commissioned Paintings for Holiday Gifts 2017

Every holiday season I get many requests for commissions, and this year was no exception.  By now I know what to expect, and how to get ready for the holiday rush.  As always, each painting had a special story behind it, and I loved being in on the surprises.  My favorite painting this year was the view of looking up at aspen trees in the Fall (Maria wanted to keep it).  The best response was from a customer in Texas about the Shiner Bock painting, “OMG THIS PAINTING IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!! You’ve officially made me cry! Today has been an absolutely horrible day and you’ve made it so much better. Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover it!”  Messages like this make me happy about being an artist.

We take a picture of every painting that leaves the studio, so here is a slideshow of the paintings I made this holiday season (click on the pictures to view a slideshow).  They are all oil paint on wood panel, framed in a natural ash wood frame. I prime my paint supports red and gold before applying the oil paint, so you can see the gold paint shining through gaps in the oil paint.  This is my signature technique, and one way you can always recognize a Clendaniel original.

If you’d like to commission one, just let me know, or you can read Maria’s blog post about how to commission a painting.

Thirsty Thursday Beer Painting #86, August 18, 2016, Bullitt Train Imperial Stout by Levante Brewing Co.

Levante Brewing in West Chester, PA just celebrated its 1st anniversary last Saturday.  To commemorate this tremendous occasion, the brewery released a barrel-aged imperial stout known as Bullitt Train.  A friend of the brewery commissioned me to do an oil painting of this first bottle release, and the painting arrived to the brewery in time for the celebration.

West Chester, Pennsylvania is proud to have three local breweries within its borough: Box Car Brewpub, Iron Hill Brewery (1 of 12 locations in PA and neighboring states) and now Levante.  West Chester has some serious beer connoisseurs, and I was stoked to meet some of them when I visited the Side Bar & Restaurant in 2014, the Year of Beer Paintings, for a meet and greet.  I’m glad these lucky people have a brewery they can be proud to call their own.  I’m planning a trip to Pennsylvania in about a month, and will make a point to visit Levante.  Bullitt Train is on tap, along with many great offerings, including several IPAs, a Kolsch, a Saison, and there’s a place for local food trucks to park outside nearby the uber cool glass bay door.  I’m excited to make this trip to PA, the starting point to a six-day cross-country trip in search of tasty beers for my friend’s son’s wedding in California.

The original oil painting was a commission.  You can order a Custom Beer Painting at my Etsy shop RealArtIsBetter.

Introducing Gift Certificates from Real Art Is Better

You probably know someone who has bare walls in his/her home, and you happen to know an artist.  Or you need a gift for someone who has everything!  Buying art for someone can be tricky, if you don’t know what that person would like.  Now, you can just give them a gift certificate, and leave the decision up to them.

This Gift Certificate can be redeemed for any item in my Etsy shop, and in my studio, or can be used toward a commissioned painting.

I can mail it to you, or directly to the recipient.  If you need a last-minute gift, I can send you a PDF that you can print at home.

Click here to order a gift certificate at my Etsy shop, or stop by my studio to purchase one in person.  333 W. 4th Avenue, Suite 4, Anchorage, Alaska (please contact me to let me know when you’d like to stop by, because I don’t keep regular hours).

Beer Painting Contest for the Holidays!

I am excited to announce a contest that we started today on Facebook for one lucky person to win a custom 11″x14″ oil painting of his/her favorite beer for the holidays! The contest will run through December 13th, and I will announce a winner on December 14th.  If everything goes smoothly, the painting will be ready two weeks later.  People can earn additional entries by sharing the contest on their Facebook timeline.  I’m excited to find out who the winner will be, and wonder which beer I will be painting.  I will retain the copyright to the painting, and perhaps will release limited-edition prints of it.

Click here to enter the contest. Good luck!
