The featured beer painting for the day is of Raven’s Eye Imperial Stout, a certified organic ale by Eel River Brewing Company, located in the heart of the Redwoods in Scotia, California. An amazing beer that is certified organic is a huge deal to me. I’m skeptical of pesticides and GMO food products, and try to eat only organic food, which is difficult to find most of the time, especially in Alaska. I even use organic grain in my homebrew. I know from first hand experience that using organic specialty grains, as well as organic yeast and hops, and ending up with a quality product like this stout is really a major coup.
My wife and I rode our tandem bike through Scotia during our epic tour down the west coast. We had been taking turns being driver and stoker daily, until the day we visited Scotia and then continued onto the Avenue of the Giants where Maria tried to swerve onto the road to avoid hitting a small Redwood log. At the same time I thought I heard a car behind us, so I tried to ditch right from the back of the bike. We slammed into the log, which swung upward into our drive train, smashing the front chain ring and breaking the chain. Luckily, the aluminum chain ring didn’t bust in half. I banged it back into shape with the same log that did the damage, and we fine-tuned it with a Leatherman – fairly delicate work as metal fatigue is a major obstacle when bending aluminum. We rode into the campground after dark, found our spot for the night, and decided that I was a horrible stoker, so from then on I was the driver. If I had known that Eel River Brewing was in Scotia, I would have pulled over immediately for food and beer, like we did every chance we got. Unfortunately, we only had a guidebook, which was full of useful information, but omitted the location of every brewery. Drat! We limped all the way into San Jose to my uncle’s house where we waited for two weeks for spare parts to fix the bike. The bike was repaired and we rode all the way to the Mexican border, stopping at Stone Brewing Bistro for a beer at the end of the ride.
Cheers to Eel River Brewing and to organic beer! I wish you guys the best, and if I had a real raven’s eye as I passed you by, I would have known where to go to get fresh beer and food!
