Year of Beer Paintings – Day 221

The featured beer painting of the day is of Hooksett Ale by White Birch Brewing. This is a Belgian style IPA from New Hampshire. When I cracked this one open I was sitting outside, surrounded by birch trees, at the Alaska Sailing Club at Big Lake after sailing in the late afternoon. This was not my first time sailing, but it was the first time I have held the tiller, controlling the rudder. When I was in Thailand in 2010 I saw all the catamaran sailboats anchored beyond the swimming area, and swam out to them. I was blown away at how large they were. I had a small dream for a second of owning a sailboat, so I went to the library and borrowed a set of books on sailing. I read them cover-to-cover, but four years later, I couldn’t remember anything. Nothing like hands on experience.

Sailing was fun, and when I was done I sat on the shore looking out at the lake with the birches rustling in the breeze. We opened this fancy bottle of IPA, and savored the sweet beer, which was heavier on the malt than the hops. I wonder if there’s Birch syrup in this beer as an adjunct sugar. The label didn’t mention it, but I kept getting the flavor of birch syrup. Must have been the waves from sailing adversely affecting my palate. This is the first beer I’ve painted from New Hampshire, so that leaves about 30 more states to cover.

Cheers to the beautiful Birch trees, and to White Birch Brewery!

The original painting sold. You can purchase a limited-edition print at my Etsy shop.
