Thirsty Thursday Beer Painting #79, June 30, 2016, Moose Drool Brown Ale by Big Sky Brewing Co.

Moose Drool Brown Ale is probably the most famous beer that is brewed at Big Sky Brewing Company, not to be confused with the less popular and not as tasty Moosehead Lager made in Canada.  I have been having fun lately painting Alaskan animals who got a hold of some adult beverages.  I am pretty sure a moose would love to drink a Moose Drool!  In 2008 a moose wandered to downtown Anchorage and ate so many fermented Mountain-ash berries that he became a bit intoxicated, and proceeded to get tangled up in some Christmas lights, and dragging them as he walked around downtown.  As you can imagine, this created a lot of excitement among the locals, and Buzzwinkle became a famous moose!  Midnight Sun Brewing even released a special beer in honor of this silly moose called Buzzwinkle Sour Wheat Ale, with a label created by cartoonist Chad Carpenter.  So, I’m pretty sure a moose would enjoy a tasty craft beer.

Heres’ a shameless plug: my art show at Midnight Sun Brewing Co. comes down tonight, so if you get a chance to get in there today, take a look, grab a beer, an art print, or snag a brand new original painting!

Cheers to the WILD life of Alaska!  May your beer stay safe away from the hoofs, paws, or claws of a thirsty beast when you are out adventuring with beer!

This original oil painting, and limited-edition prints are for sale at my Etsy shop RealArtIsBetter.

Year of Beer Paintings – Day 155

The daily beer painting is of Moose Drool Brown Ale by Big Sky Brewing Company located in Missoula, Montana.  Established in 1995, this brewery is about to hit its 20th anniversary.  I wonder how it will celebrate that milestone.  This brewery has been through a lot.  The Moose Drool Brown Ale is the flagship beer from Big Sky Brewing, but Moosehead Breweries Ltd. has made it hard for this brewery to expand.  A ridiculous lawsuit against Big Sky by Moosehead over the name has prevented the brewery from selling Moose Drool on the East Coast!  Just because the name has the word moose in it!  What kind of lawyer did the brewery hire?  The fact that Moosehead got its way just seems ridiculous.  The two beers are not even a similar type!  Brown ale is way different from a low grade lager!  And the name differs by 50%.  Does Moosehead own the rights to the word moose?  Anybody mistaking Moosehead for Moose Drool probably normally drinks Bud Light anyway.

Long time advocates for aluminum packaging, Big Sky put out an aluminum bottle in 2004.  Ten years later, all its regular offerings are available in snazzy cans.  Aluminum packaging is way better for consuming beer during certain types of outdoor activities such as backpacking, mountain biking, or basically anytime that the tensile strength of the vessel is stressed.  If your beer is compromised, at least you won’t be digging glass out of your bag.  Also, beer chills faster in aluminum, so it is quick to chill in the “crick.”

Okay, so we know a moose on a can is a beautiful concept, but what about the beer itself?  Growing up, I always heard rumors that the best beer was Moose Drool, as it was one of the first craft breweries I heard about.  Oh, so remarkable compared to boring domestic beers.  Malty, but also roasty, this is not a hop bomb, but a melodious homage to the grains within this product.  Rich, mahogany brown, this beer has a lustrous golden foam that entices and resembles a fine swiss cheese.  Sweet and refreshing, I would suggest this one to be consumed outside on a cooler day.  Nothing makes a beer taste better than fresh air and open spaces!

Cheers, Big Sky Brewing!  Way to make great beer in Montana!  Moose Drool is a classic, and I am proud to include it in my Year of Beer Paintings series!

Year of Beer Paintings – Day 97

Happy National Beer Day!  And Happy Beerthday to me!  Ironic that the two dates coincide! The beer painting of the day is of Pleasure Town IPA from Midnight Sun Brewing Company!  This has been my go-to brew at the MSBC taproom, and now it is available in cans, so I can take it anywhere!  Last night I shared some with my family for my early birthday dinner.  This beer is fun!  I think the label has a nice character to it.  I know that both sexes enjoy a nice IPA and that dudes and chicks are into the Belgian Tripel known as Panty Peeler, but it seems to me these beer labels tell funny stories about what may occur if you imbibe too much of that particular drink.  The Panty Peeler label has a woman riding a caribou while losing her bikini, which is obviously what will occur if you drink a whole bottle of 9% beer.  The Pleasure Town label predicts a similar scenario, but I think you may have to consume the whole six-pack to end up waving your tighty whities as you gallop off into the night on a moose. Even though the man riding the moose is blitzed, you gotta love that mustache!  At least he looks good in his stupor!  The case I bought the day after the cans were released came with a stick-on mustache!  So, contrary to advertising, the mustache was included!  I put it on my beer fridge in my painting studio to keep its upper lip warm.  Enjoy your Beer Day Monday and stop by the Loft for a fresh beer and take a six pack of Pleasure Town IPA home.  Just remember to share the six-pack with a friend so you don’t end up waving your underwear in surrender. To MSBC, my local brewery with a wild sense of humor!  The beer will put you in the right mindset for enjoying the type of gags these labels will inspire!

You can purchase this painting, or a limited-edition print at my Etsy Shop.
