Year of Beer Paintings – Day 161

Tiiiime keeps on slippin’ slippin’ slippin’ into the future!  Good thing you don’t actually have to hear me sing.  I think I am always flat (like homebrew).  Today’s beer painting is Saison from Brasserie St. Feuillen located in La Roeulx, Belgium.  So this Saison really is a farm-house ale from Belgium.  La Roeulx is a small town to the South West of Brussels.  This brewery, founded in 1853, has been around way before the craft beer renaissance of the Pacific North West, before Prohibition and even before WWI.  But for a European brewery these guys are new kids on the block.  Some of the famous breweries in Germany are from the turn of the millennium, the one before last.  So 150 years is nothing compared to 1,150!  Beers made in Europe are traditionally crafted following generations of brewing heritage, while here in the USA we are avant-garde and the brews are more artistic.  Why do we call it craft beer when the best brew is more of a fine art than a craft?  St. Feuillien has been artfully crafting this beer for only a few years, since 2009.

So down to the golden contents within the bronzed, slim shaped can.  This Saison is the newest addition to St. Feuillien brew line, and I would have to say they hit the mark spot on!  I know there are many Saisons out there, but not in a can.  I’ve had many different Belgian style Saison beers in cans and they pale in comparison to this true Belgium beer!  The closest thing I can compare this too is beer from my home brewery.  I have been playing with yeast and have sampled a couple different Saison yeasts.  Looks like White Labs has been doing a good job harvesting yeast (and me too, I cultivate my own starters and save strains in my fridge), because it tasted just like this St. Feuillien product.  Bready, spicy and simple, this tasted hoppier than many other European beers.  Not too sour, but you can taste the complexity of the Saison yeast producing a peppery clove spice, but without any actual pepper or cloves in the beer.  At 6.5% ABV this one is a sipper, but won’t leave you drunk in the corner like some of the stronger Saisons out there!

Thanks, Andrew Schmitt, for introducing me to this fine beer!  Cheers to St. Feuillien for keeping it in the family, may your newest beer be made for many generations to come!  A perfect Saison for any season!
