Year of Beer Paintings – Day 141

The daily beer painting is of Stone Brewing Company’s Imperial Russian Stout (2014 release).  If you have never had an imperial Russian stout, get down to the store, and if you are lucky enough to see Stone’s latest version, nab it now!  We were very pleased with our bottle last night, it was extremely delicious!  This is the kind of beer that cellars well, so consider buying a case and putting away a few bottles.

This beer style is like India Pale Ale (IPA) in that its formulation was invented by the English as an export product.  This one wasn’t going to India, but to the Russian courts in Moscow!  So if we call India Pale Ale an IPA, why don’t we call Imperial Russian Stout an IRS?

Whatever the name is, this beer was a delight to my taste buds.  Stone brewers are “arrogant bastard” for a reason; they really delivered on this one, as they do with many of their products.  Roasted barley, dark chocolate, coffee and a light caramel flavor are predominate in the overall taste.  The smell is amazing, and you can totally sense the high alcohol content (11%) right away!  We went for a walk after this one, but I should have just gone to bed.  I had a nice time, but it was a bit dreamy.  Maybe, as my friend Rich Morgan would say, this is a “nighty night beer.”

Great work Stone!  I wish I could drink this beer for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, alas I just don’t have the liver for it!  Keep up the good work; you deserve to be smug about it!

You can purchase this painting, or a limited-edition print at my Etsy shop.
